One week after splitting a pair of District 4-A games with preseason district favorite Coalfield, the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats continued their strong early season district play by knocking off Jellico on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday, the Lady 'Cats made the trip to the Kentucky border and handed the Lady Blue Devils a 9-3 setback. On Tuesday, the Lady Devils made the long drive to Arrowhead Park, but the trip wasn't a good one as Oliver Springs picked up an 11-1 victory in five innings.
The Lady 'Cats didn't win by the mercy rule, but the contest was never in doubt as Oliver Springs scored all nine of their runs in the first four innings of play.
Five of those runs came in the top of the first inning as the Lady 'Cats came out on fire.
Kayla Crisp got things going with a single and that was followed by back-to-back doubles from Kayla Aloisi and Shelby Miller. After an out, Shannon McColl singled and Chelsea Sheldon tripled. All five scored in the inning with Lauren Johnson driving in the final run of the frame.
Oliver Springs made it 8-0 with three runs in the top of the third inning.
Johnson walked and Amber Thorton singled to start the inning, but the big blow of the frame came with a triple from Charlee Roberts. Crisp also singled in the inning to give the Lady 'Cats the eight-run lead.
Jellico scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 8-2, but Oliver Springs got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth inning.
Miller walked and scored the run. McColl (walk) and Sheldon (single) also reached safely in the inning.
Oliver Springs would see five base runners reach safely in the final three innings, but none would score. Aloisi singled in the fifth, McColl singled and Sheldon walked in the sixth, while Crisp and Aloisi both had singles in the seventh inning.
Jellico did score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 9-3.
Crisp (3-5, 1 run), Aloisi (4-5, 1 run), McColl (2-3, 1 run) and Sheldon (2-3, 1 run) all had multiple hits on the day for the Lady 'Cats.
Tuesday's game was actually more competitive although the Lady 'Cats won in five innings. The Lady 'Cats led only 3-1 after four innings of play, but Matt Headden's squad scored eight runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.
Like Monday's game, the Lady 'Cats took control with three runs in the first inning.
Crisp again got things going with a single and that was followed by walks to Aloisi and Myra Lloyd. All three would score as Sheldon and McColl had hits later in the inning.
Oliver Springs went hitless in the second, third and fourth innings and that allowed the Lady Devils to pull within 3-1 heading into the fifth inning of play.
However, the bottom of the fifth inning would see the Lady 'Cats catch fire and end the game early.
Aloisi doubled and Miller walked to start the inning then both runners scored on a double from Sheldon. McColl followed with a single and she eventually scored on a wild pitch that made the score 6-1.
Brittany Gallaher reached safely after being hit by a pitch then Roberts and Crisp received two-out walks to load keep the inning alive and load the bases.
Aloisi and Miller would then end the game earl with back-to-back two-run singles.
Aloisi (2-3, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), Sheldon (2-3, 2 RBIs, 1 run) and McColl (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) all had multiple hits for Oliver Springs in the win.
Gallaher picked up the win after tossing a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts.
