While upsets seemed to be the norm during the Area 4 AA middle school basketball tournament all week, girls' semifinal action seemed to work out just the way the brackets intended.
In the first game of the night, Oliver Springs led early and often, then put Lenoir City away, winning 35-21.
The second game pitted No. 2 seed Wartburg against upstart Midway.
The Lady Green Waves fell behind early and could never make up enough ground, losing 38-26 to the Lady Bulldogs.
Both Oliver Springs and Wartburg advanced to Saturday's championship game, which was played in Harriman. Midway and Lenoir City were also slated to play in the very important consolation game, with the area's top three teams advancing in the postseason.
Oliver Springs vs. Lenoir City
The Lady Bobcats jumped out to 7-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, with both teams appearing to be a bit nervous. Neither could get the offense rolling early, but thanks to Courntey Jones and Emily Duggins, the Lady Bobcats finally found a groove.
That continued in the second quarter and Oliver Springs would build a 15-8 lead at the end of the second quarter, thanks mostly to tenacious defense. Rachel and Emily Griffith, along with Jones, helped the offense, which remained steady for the Lady Bobcats.
Things got a little tense in the third, as Lenoir City was able to climb back into the game. But Oliver Springs remained calm and maintained an advantage, leading 23-19 heading into the fourth and final period.
Oliver Springs, however, would hold Lenoir City to just two points in the fourth quarter, cruising to a 35-21 win.
Oliver Springs (35) Jones 11, E. Griffith 8, E. Duggins 8, R. Griffith 6, S. Duggins 2.
Midway vs. Wartburg
Unfortunately, the Lady Green Waves came out flat and Wartburg came out on fire. When the smoke cleared, Midway was in dire straights heading into the second period, trailing 16-3.
The defense got better, but the offense squeezed out another three points in the second as Wartburg built a 22-16 lead at the break.
Abby Bertram tried to lead the Lady Green Waves back, with some help from Alexis Taylor, but it wasn't enough as Wartburg led 30-16 at the end of the third, going on for a 38-26 victory.
Midway (26) Bertram 9, Taylor 6, Hall 4, Lewis 4, Hines 3.
