The Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats opened postseason play Tuesday night with a dominating 58-35 victory over Jellico in the first round of the 2014 District 4-A Tournament played at Terry L. Hacker Gymnasium.

Oliver Springs never trailed Tuesday and had the contest well in hand by halftime.

In the first quarter, Lady ’Cat guard Emily Griffith came out on fire. She buried two 3-pointers and scored Oliver Springs’ first eight points of the night. By the time the first period ended, Griffith scored 10 points and Oliver Springs held a 16-9 advantage.

The second quarter would see the Lady ’Cats putting on a clinic. Emily Griffith’s sister, Rachel, scored eight quick points as Oliver Springs used a 10-2 run to make the score 26-11.

Emily Griffith then drained two more 3-pointers and scored eight more points as the Lady ’Cats’ lead grew to as many as 23 points at 38-15 before settling for a 41-210 lead at halftime.

Emily Griffith did not miss a shot from the floor in the first half. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from downtown. She was also 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Oliver Springs didn’t score as much in the second half, but it did not matter as Jellico was never able to make a run at the Lady ’Cats. Oliver Springs won the second half by two points, 17-15, to put the finishing touches on their 17-point victory.

Emily Griffith led Oliver Springs on the night with 20 points, seven assists and four steals. Rachel Griffith (12 points, 5 steals) also scored in double figures while Rachel Smith and Jessica Gilmore led the Lady ’Cats in rebounding with six each.

Carla Beans had a great night for Jellico in defeat. She ended the game with 14 points and 19 rebounds.

With the victory, Oliver Springs advances to the District 4-A Tournament semifinals where they will meet Oakdale Friday night. The Lady ’Cats swept the Lady Eagles during the regular season.
