The Harriman Lady Blue Devils wrapped up the District 3-A regular season championship Friday night as Jim Cordell’s squad knocked off defending champion Greenback at Richard Pickell Gymnasium, 61-45.
The news, however, was as good for the Blue Devil boys as their string of tough losses in district play continues. Friday night, the Devils dropped to 4-5 in district play after dropping a 68-65 decision to the Cherokees in overtime.
Friday’s loss marked the fourth time that the Devils have lost by three points or less in district play. Harriman lost by two points at Greenback, one point at Rockwood, and three points at home against Grace Christian.
It wasn’t necessarily easy Friday night as Greenback played well early, but Harriman’s offensive firepower eventually overwhelmed the Lady Cherokees.
Greenback did hold a two-point lead, 14-12, after eight minutes of play, but Harriman took the lead for good in the second period by doubling up the Lady Cherokees 18-9 in the frame, making the score 30-23 at halftime in favor of the Lady Devils.
Harriman added to their lead in each of the final two periods as they cruised home to the 16-point victory. The Lady Devils outscored Greenback 15-9 in the third period and 16-13 in the final eight minutes of play.
Shantel Boyd led Harriman on the night with 19 points while Cree Moore (11 points) and Kiersten Douglass (10 points) also scored in double figures. Moriah Anderson (8 points) and Lindsey Daugherty (8 points) came close to giving the Lady Devils five players in double figures.
Ashley Brown (14 points), Megan Rollins (13 points) and Hannah Dukes (11 points) scored in double figures for Greenback.
Harriman (61) Boyd 19, Anderson 8, Douglass 11, Daugherty 8, Moore 10, Higgins 2, Kyker 3.
If Harriman’s luck changes in the postseason then the Devils could make a run at Murfreesboro, but for now Jeff King’s squad are left to think about how close they are to a district championship.
Early on Friday it didn’t appear that Harriman would be in for a close game as Greenback roared out of the gate to hold an 18-7 lead after eight minutes of play.
Harriman, however, did stem the tide in the second period and actually cut into Greenback’s lead as the Devils used a 19-15 advantage in the period to pull within 33-26 at halftime.
Harriman wasn’t able to make up any ground in the third period as both teams scored 16 points, but the Devils battled back in the fourth period and nearly won at the end before a last-second shot attempt was blocked away.
Harriman couldn’t keep the momentum in overtime as Greenback won the extra period, 10-7, to lock up third place in the district while dropping the Devils to fourth.
Dimitrique Inman led Harriman on the night with a career-high 25 points. Willie Collins (10 points) also scored in double digits for the Blue Devils.
Cody Buchanan (19 points) and Mykal Titlow (17 points) did most of the damage for Greenback with Chris Sabo chipping in 11 points.
Harriman (65) Collins 10, Davis 3, Inman 25, Dishman 3, Sawyer 4, Kyker 7, Gallaher 6, Love 3, Phillips 4.
