The Harriman Lady Blue Devils were hoping to end the District 3-A Tournament with an upset victory over No. 2 seed Tellico Plains in Tuesday’s consolation game, but the Lady Bears wouldn’t be upset for a second straight game, as they held off the Lady Devils, 53-49.
With the victory, Tellico Plains enters Friday’s Region 2-A Tournament as the No. 3 seed from District 3-A and will travel to Oneida to take on the District 4-A runner-up Lady Indians.
Harriman won’t have to travel as far Friday, as the No. 4 seed Lady Devils travel to Wartburg to take on the District 4-A champion Lady Bulldogs.
Tellico Plains held the lead for much of Tuesday’s contest, but had trouble creating separation for Johnny Jones’ squad.
The teams traded baskets at the beginning before the Lady Bears used a 7-2 run at the end of the first period to take a 15-8 lead after eight minutes of play.
Five different players scored for Tellico Plains in the period with Jasmine Harris’ four points leading the way. Laci Sells scored four points to lead Harriman.

Harriman, however, didn’t throw in the towel. The Lady Devils scored seven of the last eight points in the frame with the last basket coming from Abigail Higgins at the buzzer to pull the Lady Devils within four points at 40-36 with eight minutes left to play.
Harriman’s run continued into the fourth quarter as a Lynzee Lunsford capped what would be a 13-1 run with a lay up to give the Lady Devils a 42-40 with 6:45 left to play.
From there the teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before a Garren basket gave the Lady Bears the lead for good at 48-46.
Harriman entered the final minute trailing 49-47, but a pair of turnovers allowed Tellico Plains to push their lead to 52-47 following a Garren free throw with 20.7 seconds left to play.
Harriman still had some fight left, and used a pair of free throws from Darian Boyd with 18.8 seconds left to pull within three points at 52-49.
Tellico Plains then missed a pair of free throws to leave the door open for overtime. Harriman got a great look on their next possession, but Lunsford’s trey wouldn’t fall then the Lady Bears put the game away with a free throw from Valerie Cheek with 6.9 seconds remaining.
