The Kingston Lady Jackets gave the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers all they could handle, but a shot by Nicole Hassler off a rebound for Stone Memorial quashed the hopes of what would have been a stunning upset as the Lady Panthers escaped the Jackets’ Nest with a 39-38 win.
Stone Memorial had a 9-5 lead after the end of the first period and doubled the score to 18-10 at halftime, thanks to an 8-0 run at one point in the second period.
Kingston, however, hung tough and pulled to within 32-26 at the end of the third period.
The Lady Jackets buzzed back into contention with a 12-4 run that gave them a 38-36 lead with under a minute to go, but Stone Memorial scored on a Julia Webb free throw and a Nicole Hassler rebound to take a 39-38 lead.
The Lady Jackets still had one more shot as Mica Gaines was fouled on the final shot from half court, which could have been three free throws, but it was ruled a one-and-one and Gaines couldn't convert the free throw under what was a very high-pressure situation for any basketball player.
Kingston held a commanding 45-29 edge on the boards, but lost in team steals, 10-9.
Stone Memorial was led by Hassler (15 points), Webb (8 points, 5 boards), and Morgan Bridges (6 points).
Kingston was led by Haley Cornellison (16 points, 12 boards), Makayla Cordell (8 points) and Brooke Smith (7 points, 6 boards).
Makisha Fuller (8 boards), Gaines (6 boards) and Mollie Eason (5 boards) each performed admirably in the loss.

The Stone Memorial Panthers pounced on the Kingston Yellow Jackets early and often, en route to a 72-48 win Friday night.
The Panthers used a 10-5 run to start the game to take a 21-14 lead after the first period.
The second period was all Stone Memorial as they had a 23-2 advantage in the second period to take a 44-16 halftime lead.
The Panthers got out to a 59-20 lead at one point in the third thanks to a 15-4 stretch, but Kingston whittled it down to 67-34 thanks to an 11-5 stretch of their own.
The Jackets had a 14-5 tilt in the final period to make the final score 72-48.
Stone had a 36-19 advantage on the boards, a 10-7 edge in steals and a 10-8 three-point shooting advantage.
Stone Memorial was led by Brock Rowan (15 points), Brandon Cole (14 points, 5 boards), Robert Troino (13 points) and Dustin Dishman (10 points, 5 boards).
Alex Kiser (8 boards) and David Keyes (5 boards) played well in the win.
