When Kingston ace lefty Reiley Isham graduated last season, a big hole was left in Kingston’s line-up but it appears as if freshman Jessica Korb is more than capable of filling the void.
With the exception of a disastrous sixth inning against Sweetwater in which the Lady Wildcats scored six unearned runs, Korb has allowed just a total of three runs (one earned) in her other 20 innings on the pitching rubber.
Korb’s latest outing came Wednesday as the Lady Jacket hurler tossed a two-hitter with one walk in leading the Lady Jackets to a 6-2 victory over Rockwood.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” Lady Jacket head coach Mike Neal said when asked about replacing Isham with a freshman. “I had never seen her throw a pitch before and we had to replace a three-year starter. I am more than pleased with her. We put a lot on her and I’m looking forward to having her here another three years.”
Neal is also pleased with his team as a whole. After suffering the opening loss to Sweetwater, Kingston came back with an 11-0 victory over Oliver Springs and they followed that with Wednesday’s win over Rockwood.
“I’m real pleased with how we came back,” Neal said. “We played real well yesterday (Tuesday) against a good pitcher (Oliver Springs’ Kim Hall).”
Against Rockwood, Kingston failed to score in their first inning, but the Lady Jackets scored in four of the next five innings in taking a 6-0 lead.
Kingston’s first run came in the top of the second inning. Jennifer Givens led off the inning with a single and she eventually scored on a ground ball to short from Molly Goldston.
The Lady Jackets used a two-out rally to score their second run of the game in the third inning as Alexis Williams, Givens and Katie Hamilton strung together three straight hits to make the score 2-0.
The fourth inning would see the Lady Jackets pull away with three more runs.
Anna Hamilton doubled to start the inning and she scored on a two-out infield single off the bat of Jacquelyn Givens. After a walk to Nicky Foster, Williams delivered an RBI single and Jennifer Givens walked to load the bases for Katie Hamilton. Hamilton would draw a walk to make the score 5-0.
Kingston’s final run of the contest came in the top of the sixth inning. Foster walked with one out to get things going and she scored on a single from Williams.
Korb lost her shutout bid when the Lady Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Carissa Huskins started the inning by reaching on an error then a pitch hit Amber Comer to give Rockwood two runners on with no outs. Huskins scored on an RBI ground out from Kelsey Brackett then Haley Yelton drove in Comer with a single.
Williams (3-4, 2 RBI, 1 run), Jennifer Givens (3-4, 1 run) and Katie Hamilton (2-2, 2 RBIs) all had multiple hits on the day for the Lady Jackets.
