Lady Raiders get back on track

It didn’t take long for the Roane State Raiderettes to start a new winning streak.

Last Wednesday, Walters State snapped Roane State’s 13-game winning streak, but the Raiderettes responded by knocking off No. 25 ranked Chattanooga State on the road on Sat-urday, 65-55, and Todd Wright’s squad made it two in a row Wednesday evening with a 70-67 road victory at Cleveland State.

Roane State improved to 21-3 overall and 9-2 in conference play with the back-to-back wins. The 9-2 conference mark is good for a first place tie with Walters State in the TJCCAA Eastern Division standings.

Roane State returns home Saturday to take on Hiwassee then the Raiderettes will travel to Walters State Wednesday for another showdown with the Lady Senators.

Roane State vs. Chattanooga State

When the Raiderettes lost to Walters State they hit went just 2-20 from beyond the three-point arc. Saturday, however, the Raiderettes connected on 10 of their 20 long range bombs and that was the key in handing the Lady Tigers a 65-55 defeat.

Roane State would hit four of those three-pointers in the first 20 minutes as they led 28-26 at halftime.

Aundrea Marshall led Roane State in the first half with two three-pointers and six total points.

The second half would see the trio of Katie Butcher, Tikedra Jones and Casha Foster delivering the knockout blow.

Jones led the trio with two three-pointers and 14 total points. Butcher was close behind with three triples and 10 points while Foster dialed long distance once and scored nine points.

Jones led the Raiderettes on the night with 18 points while Foster had 12 points and nine assists. Butcher finished the game with 12 points.

Chattanooga State’s Latrice Bayman led all scorers with 21 points.

Roane State vs. Cleveland State

The Raiderettes snatched victory from the jaws of defeat Wednesday as Todd Wright’s squad rallied from five points down in the final 1:30 of the contest to pick up a 70-67 victory.

Trailing 66-61 with less than 90 seconds to play, Roane State’s Brittany Steen scored off an assist from Casha Foster to make the score 66-63. Roane State’s defense followed by forc-ing a shot clock violation and that led to Taylor Oliver cutting the deficit to 66-65 after a pair of free throws.

With time running low, the Raiderettes fouled with 16 seconds left and Cleveland State’s Kanita Holloway would make one of two from the charity stripe to make the score 67-65.

Roane State elected to go for the win and that proved to be a wise choice and Steen buried a three-pointer to give the Raiderettes a 68-67 lead with nine seconds left to play.

Cleveland State’s last chance at victory ended when Foster drew a charge with two seconds left then the Raiderettes added a pair of free throws to ice the victory.

Foster (19 points) and Steen (16 points) led the way for Roane State on the evening. Thirty of the duo’s 35 points came in the second half.

Tikedra Jones (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Raiderettes.

Barbara Holland led the Lady Cougars with 24 points while Angie Wells had 15.
