After splitting a pair of games in the regular season, Monday's match-up between No. 2 Grace Christian Academy and No. 3 Rockwood in the second round of the District 3-A Tournament was expected to be close. That wasn't the case, however, as Larry Brackett's Lady Tigers put together a strong performance in rolling to a 10-0 victory.
The close game that most people expected took place early on as neither team mounted a scoring threat in the first two innings of play.
Rockwood, however, started to take control with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
Becca Farmer opened the inning with a single and that was followed by a walk to Tatum Penley. Chelsea Cheek advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt then both runners eventually scored on a single from Kelsey Brackett.
The Lady Tigers made it 5-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
A pitch hit Haley Yelton to start the inning then Reanna Henderson laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Yelton to second. The biggest play of the inning came next when Farmer hit a ground ball to second that would see the Lady Rams try to throw Yelton out at third, but Yelton would beat the throw.
Penley then walked to load the bases and that was followed by a successful squeeze bunt by Cheek and then an RBI single from Lexi Monroe that made the score 5-0.
Rockwood delivered the early knockout blow with five runs in the fifth inning.
Hayley Turpin, Yelton, Henderson, Farmer and Penley all scored in the frame with Farmer, Penley, Cheek and Monroe driving in runs.
Turpin was the beneficiary of all of Rockwood's offense as she fired a two-hitter with one walk and one strikeout past the Lady Rams.
Monroe (2-2, 2 RBIs) and Farmer (2-3, 1 RBI, 3 runs) had multiple hits for the Lady Tigers in the victory.
With the victory, Rockwood advanced to Tuesday's third round and a match-up against No. 1 seed Midway.
