The District 3-A Softball Tournament got off to a great start for the Midway Lady Green Waves Friday evening as they downed Rockwood 13-3 in the opening round of play.
Midway improved to 16-7 overall with the win and will face Grace Christian Monday in the double elimination portion of the tournament.
Midway employed a pair of sophomore pitchers in the win against Rockwood.
Raygn Hall worked the first four innings and gave up three runs on four hits with no walks or errors. Hall struck out two and got the win.
Payton Kelley picked up the save, pitching the last two innings. Kelley allowed one hit and hit one batter. She struck out four of the eight batters she faced.
Rockwood broke onto the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning.
Darian Green doubled to start the inning and scored on a Cheyenne Thompson single. After stealing second and third, Thompson scored on a bounce out to first by Dakota Thompson.
Midway loaded the bases in the first inning, but couldn't score. Abby Bertram and Kallie Sohm singled to start the inning then Kelley walked with two outs to load them up, but they would be left stranded after the third out.
Midway did cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second.
Katy Brookshire walked and Michaela Langley singled behind her then Bertram bounced to second and drove in Brookshire.
Midway took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with a four-run rally.
Hall walked to start the inning and gave way to courtesy runner Alexis Bosnak. Jayde Rose followed with a single then Kelley doubled to score both runners. Kaylee Burton followed with another double then Brookshire ripped a triple to give Midway the 5-2 lead.
Rockwood did keep it close for a while when they scored a run in the top of the fourth to trim the lead to 5-3.
Green singled and scored the run on a double from Cheyenne Thompson.
Midway picked up two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead.
Sohm walked and Hall singled before Rose ripped a double to the gap in right-center. Burton drove in the final run of the inning with a single.
Rockwood put only two more runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings. Chelsea Cheek was hit by a pitch in the fifth and Kristen Isham singled in the sixth, but she was out at second on a double play.
Midway scored a single run in the fifth and the game at this point looked like it might go the distance.
Sohm doubled and scored on a single from Hall. Kelley and Burton also reached base in the inning, but Midway would leave the bases full at the end of the frame.
Midway struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to get the early ending.
Langley and Jaime Kilby reached on errors to start the inning. Bertram followed with a slap single to load the bases then Sohm roped a hit into the outfield that cleared the bases. Hall and Rose drew walks to reload the bases before Kelley ripped a line drive to the fence that scored Sohm and Hall with the game-ending runs.
