The Midway Lady Green Waves failed in their first attempt to unseat Grace Christian from the District 3-A regular season crown, but will get another chance next week to at least tie them for the championship. Midway dropped a 7-5 decision Tuesday at Grace and will play them again Thursday at Midway.
The Lady Waves did have their chances against Grace Christian, but couldn't come up with a run scoring hit in almost every inning. Midway pounded out 12 hits in the game and had six walks. Grace had only 11 hits and were issued only one walk.
The biggest difference was that Grace Christian committed one error while Midway committed three, all in the fourth inning when Grace scored five runs.
Raygn Hall pitched all seven innings for Midway, allowing seven runs with only two that were earned. Hall was tagged for 11 hits. She walked one and had five strikeouts.
Grace scored two runs in the bottom of the first and held the lead till the third inning when Midway scored four runs.
Midway put runners on base every inning. Halie Wiley walked to start the game, but was left on base. Hall doubled in the second followed by a walk to Kaylee Burton, but both would be stranded.
In the third inning, Kallie Sohm doubled with one out to start the rally. Alex Richardson singled and Christina Stansbury walked to load the bases then Hall singled to drive in Sohm.
Senior Alisa Barger came up with a huge triple that cleared the bases. Shade Narramore walked behind Barger, but Midway could not keep the rally going with the next two batters recording outs.
Wiley singled and Stansbury walked in the fourth, but both remained on base at the end of the inning.
Grace Christian retook the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth after Midway had three errors in the inning.
In the fifth, Barger reached on an error, Burton walked, and Wiley had a short single to load the bases, but all three would be left on base.
Richardson and Hall singled in the sixth inning, but could not move around to score.
The Lady Waves got their final run in the seventh when Narramore doubled to start the inning. After two outs, Wiley singled to score Narramore. Sohm singled, but both would still be on base when the game ended.
Midway will also visit Clinton Friday in a non district game. Monday and Tuesday the Lady Waves will play at McMinn Central and Loudon.
