The Midway Lady Waves stayed on course for a rematch with Grace Christian after they held on for a 2-0 win over Tellico Plains on Thursday.
Midway improved to 8-1 in District 3-A with the only loss coming against Grace last Tuesday. The rematch against Grace for a tie for the regular season championship will be played Wednesday at Midway.
The Lady Waves are 18-7-1 overall.
While the Lady Waves await the rematch, they will stay busy playing at McMinn Central and Loudon Monday and Tuesday. They will even have an extra home game Thursday against Jellico.
Even with two more home games to go, the Lady Waves celebrated Senior day Thursday and began to say good bye to five seniors, Halie Wiley, Alex Richardson, Christina Stansbury, Alisa Barger and Shade Narramore.
Two of Midway’s seniors sparked the rally that gave them the tight win over the Lady Bears. Barger and Narramore singled to start the fifth inning and eventually scored on singles from Abby Bertram and Kallie Sohm to give them just enough runs to get the win.
Before the breakout fifth inning, Lady Wave base runners were scarce. Freshman Jayde Rose singled in the third for the first Midway base runner. Stansbury doubled in the fourth while Barger picked up another hit in the sixth, but that would be it for the Lady Waves.
Freshman pitcher Raygn Hall pitched the shutout, but not before wiggling out of several jams. Tellico put single runners on base in the first, fourth, and sixth innings. The Lady Bears had two runners on in the second and seventh innings.
With only one out in the seventh, and runners on the corners, Hall got a big strikeout and then got the last batter to ground out.
Hall allowed six hits and no walks. One Midway error in the seventh put the two Tellico runners on base.
Hall had a season-high 10 strikeouts.
