Some Roane County News readers love Gerald Largen’s column, A View from Lick Skillet.
Others clearly love to hate it.
Whatever anyone thinks of Largen’s opinions, any Roane County resident has to appreciate his recent deeds.
Largen has taken steps to donate his more than 100 acres of rural land on Watts Bar Lake and Bowman Bend Road to the state for public use.
Largely undeveloped lakefront land like Largen’s is hard to come by these days and is worth a fortune — between $3 million to $10 million, depending on the state of the economy.
The land would be any developer’s dream to work with.
This gift, which will be administered by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, will provide recreational opportunities for Roane County residents for generations to come.
Largen’s giveaway is an inspiring example of philanthropy that is rarely seen at this level.
We hope it prompts others to look around them and, perhaps, take heed of the spirit of the late President John F. Kennedy’s words:
“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
Our thanks to Largen for bestowing on all of us this amazing gift.
