25 Years Ago
Landmark Community Newspapers Inc. of Shelbyville, Ky., purchased the Roane County News, its weekly shopper, The Rockwood Times, The Harriman Record and the Morgan County News. No immediate changes were planned in the operation of the newspapers. LCNI was a division of Landmark Communications Inc. of Norfolk, Va., a diversified media company with holdings in television, radio, metro dailies and video programming.

A reinterpretation of what constitutes a gambling machine by the court of appeals caused District Attorney General Scott McCluen to create a Gambling Task Force with the assistance of other state agencies, to combat the persistent problem of gambling in the Ninth Judicial District. Written notice was served to those businesses that might be involved in such activities, “other than that, they don’t know when we will show up at their door.”

Five Years Ago
The Roane County Commission voted unanimously for a plan to purchase property next to Dollar General in Kingston and pursue funding and plans to build a jail there. Officials hoped a formal plan to build a new jail would spare them from decertification of the old jail.

One Year Ago
Gerald Largen, lawyer, historian and columnist in Roane County transferred his property on Bowman Bend Road to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to be maintained for the enjoyment of Roane County residents and visitors. The beautiful, rural, 112 acres include more than a mile of level lakeshore, a couple of quiet coves, woods, open fields and botanical treasures, native and exotic. Public access was hoped to be available in late summer of 2011.
