After much discussion — and knowing taxes would have to be raised to pay for it — the Roane County Commission voted 11-3 to give the next county executive and county attorney pay raises of $7,679 and $6,613, respectively. Reasons cited were a demand for service, progress and quality government and keeping in mind the responsibilities of each.

A Harriman high-speed chase was chosen as part of the FOX TV show “Police Videos.” Just days after Harriman Police Department installed its new squad car video cameras, a high-speed chase was filmed involving a Kingston suspect and several members of the Harriman Police Department and the Roane County Sheriff’s Office. No one was hurt in the incident.

Four members of an Oliver Springs family who pooled their money to buy multiple Powerball lottery tickets had one of five second-place-winning tickets which netted family members a little more than $125,000 each.

Children at Mrs. Mary’s Daycare in Kingston had a special pen pal, U.S. Air Force Sgt. Christopher Hogenmiller, a member of the 447th EMEDS, stationed in Iraq. The children sent their photographs, drawings, candy and more to Hogenmiller. In return, he sent back a flag flown in the daycare’s honor at Sather Air Force Base, Baghdad International Airport, Iraqi paper money, a bear that has “Greetings from Baghdad” on it, an Operation Iraqi Freedom coin and a certificate. The package also included a video of the sergeant reading “Green Eggs and Ham” and thanking each child individually, using their artwork as a guide.
