Roane County boasted two district basketball champions. Freddie Wilson’s Kingston Lady Jackets took home the District 4-AA championship plaque after defeating Scott County 64-53. Team members included Sarah Trull, Amy Morton, Kelly Bullard, Carol Saffell, Dana Puckett, Laura Jones, Melanie Puckett, Stephanie Ladd, Nanaette Gallaher, Tonya Barrow, Jennifer Murr, Karen Gallaher and Carmen Francis. For District 3-A, Midway snagged its third consecutive championship against Charleston. Members of the Green Wave include Lance Wheaton, Michael Rose, Preston Woody, Jonothan Mann, Scot Carroll, Steve Crosswhite, Wayne Long, Jamie Walmsley, Chris Johnson, Jonothan Helton, Preston Moore and David Hill.

Rockwood officials asked the state to construct a bridge linking the city with the South of the River area. The $44 million proposal called for extending an 8.8-mile road from the Hwy. 58/72 intersection across the river near the New Hope and Eureka communities before connecting with Hwy. 27 south of Rockwood. South of the River residents, however, were lukewarm to the proposal: “They’re more interested in Hwy. 72” troublespots, reported state Rep. Dennis Ferguson.

Parents and teachers spoke — and school board members proved they listened by revamping the school calender to include a weeklong fall break. The break had previously been cut to two days to compensate for a later start to the school year, which many had clamored for due to stifling hot August days. “That’s the reason I supported the previous calendar,” board member Wade McCullough said. “I think starting later is better.”
