In the eyes of Virginia Hackler of Harriman, her son, Robert Hackler, was a hero. When the 36-year-old man of Lansing, Mich., learned that his sister, Linda Demo, 41, of Knoxville, would never lead a normal life again without a kidney transplant, he offered her one of his. Demo lost one kidney from a congenital kidney disease 16 years previously and had been dependent on a dialysis machine for survival since January 1985.
