25 Years Ago
A groundbreaking ceremony in Oak Ridge kicked off the transformation of the Downtown Shopping Center to Oak Ridge Mall. It was planned for about 200 stores to occupy the center, which was to offer Roane Countians an alternative to Knoxville’s West Town Mall.

10 Years Ago
The first winter storm of 2003 started shortly after noon. By rush hour, about 4 inches of snow blanketed the county, making the drive home like a demolition derby. Central Dispatch logged 55 wrecks, and while most involved no injuries, tow trucks were in high demand.

Five Years Ago
Heart transplant recipient, 11-year-old Mason Kelley, was able to return to his Harriman home from Nashville, where he had received his new heart. He had to return to Vanderbilt Medical Center once a week for six weeks for tests, and he would not be able to go back to school for at least three months, after cold and flu season was over.

One Year Ago
It was announced that the journalistic history dating from the 1800s would soon be ending. The Rockwood Times and The Harriman Record would cease publication. Louise Warmley’s column, Harriman Happenings, and Josephine McKinney’s column, ’Round Rockwood, would be moved to the Roane County News’ Monday edition.
