25 Years Ago
Angela Hanson of Lenoir City was crowned 1988 Miss Roane State during the annual pageant, a preliminary to Miss Tennessee. Her court included 19-year-old Bharti Patel of Harriman, who was looking to pursue a career in travel and tourism.

10 Years Ago
The 2002-03 Harriman Lady Devils became the first team in the school’s history to reach the TSSAA state basketball tournament. “I’m so proud of this team for taking the program where it has never been before,” said Coach Jim Cordell, in spite of the Lady Devils’ defeat at the hands of Huntingdon in the first round. He was particularly thrilled with his three seniors, Stephanie Hedgecoth, Kristie Pollitt and Beth Swymer.

Five Years Ago

Andy Edington may have misspelled “accolade” at the Southern Appalachian Regional Spelling Bee, but he sure got a lot of them for how he finished. The 13-year-old Rockwood Middle School student ably represented Roane County in the contest by finishing second, in a five-way tie. “I studied very hard,” he said afterward. “I learned a lot of words that I had never even heard before. I’m just glad I got what I got.”

Volkswagen proved it was serious about having a presence in Roane County by breaking ground for a $40 million, 400,000 square-foot warehouse-distribution center in Roane Regional Business and Technology Park. “It was a great day for Roane County,” County Executive Ron Woody said.
