Established and newcomer in Rockwood: Evans Mortuary celebrated its 10th anniversary with an open house where visitors were taken on a tour of the facility and treated to refreshments. Further south on Gateway Avenue, plans were finalized for the construction of a new Hardee’s restaurant.

A month for groundbreaking: Roane County Schools broke ground for a new middle school in Midway with a scheduled completion date of December 2002. Kingston Food City in Ladd Landing broke ground on a 43,000-square-foot grocery store expected to be completed in April 2002. And finally, Ruby Tuesday had a groundbreaking ceremony for its 172-seat restaurant, planned to open in Harriman in April 2002.

Five Years Ago
In a blast that could be heard for miles, the old Hwy. 70 bridge between Kingston and Midtown was blown up. The steel bridge had been replaced with a wider concrete span.

One Year Ago
The Roane County Board of Education approved the preliminary design for the new elementary school in the Oliver Springs area. The proposed school — later determined to be named Dyllis Springs — will be on Ollis Road and is designed to serve 600 students.
