25 Years Ago
Veterans organizations joined together at the courthouse for a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to Roane County’s war dead. The brief ceremony ended with a salute and the playing of taps.

10 Years Ago
After months of compelling and sometimes volatile debates, 57 percent of Roane Countians voted yes on a ballot referendum which would clear the way for a state lottery. Most other counties followed suit, thus lifting the constitutional ban on a lottery.

Five Years Ago
Because of the year’s drought conditions, Oliver Springs had to seek alternative water sources. Long term options being considered were: going to a well system; buying some or all water from Anderson County Utility Board; selling outside customers’ service to Anderson County; or merging with other utilities.

Remembering and honoring veterans: Wellington Place hosted a breakfast for veterans; Bowers, Kingston and Midway Elementary schools had programs which included readings, patriotic songs and speeches from veterans from branches of the armed forces.
