No, this is not a column about pirate speak, although I do — in my own special way — honor International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sept. 19.
I’ve given up.
I’m sick of it!
It once was my habit to study the weather forecasts as far as 10 days out, planning wonderful things for the nice days ahead.
Now, I don’t even look at the forecasts.
I don’t have to.
Because I know the weather will be either (a) gloomy and cool, (b) rainy and cold or (c) frigid and icy.
It is my plan to boycott all things meteorological until such time as the correct options is (d) none of the above.
People, even my cabin fever has cabin fever. And this miserable weather is doing funny things to humanity.
I’ll bet you’ve noticed it, too.
The other day, I called my mother over in Jefferson County and heard loud but vaguely familiar music in the background. Knowing she had the TV on, I queried her.
“What are you watching, Mom?”
”Gunsmoke,” she replied. “I’ve become your father.”
My late father was a sucker for Westerns, something my mother never really developed a strong taste for. But in the gloom of this miserable winter, she has taken to watching them more and more.
I get it.
Perhaps she is looking for a connection with my father to brighten her days, but I believe there’s more to it.
I think she’s probably losing herself in the Western scenery of big skies and blazing sunshine — even if, like the hats of the bad guys and the good guys, they are only in black and white.
Someone else will have to point out how winter’s gloom is altering me, but I’m putting up the best fight I can.
I’m trying to get outside more, whatever the weather, and trying to ignore my lofty place as chieftess of the Cold-Hand Clan.
Even if it’s just a walk from our office to the post office, I figure the fresh air and whatever passes for sunshine on days like these will do me good.
It’s a matter of survival.
The walls are closing in more and more each day, and I’m really feeling the squeeze.
Oh, come on, now!!
The paneling in my office just came in another 2 inches.
