A 38-year-old Deer Lodge man died Monday from injuries he sustained in a two-car accident Sunday at about 11 p.m.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Brittany Morgan, 19, of Wartburg was traveling north on Highway 27 in a 1997 Ford Mustang.
Tony L. Thornton, 38 of Deer Lodge, was following behind her in a 1988 Ford Ranger pickup.
Trooper Kenny Sheldon said in his report that Thornton came up behind Morgan’s vehicle at a “high rate of speed” and was unable to react in time. He struck Morgan’s car in the rear. The impact pushed the Mustang to the right and into the emergency lane.
Thornton’s vehicle went left, crossed the southbound and emergency lanes into a grassy area. The truck went airborne and struck trees as it went over an embankment. The truck flipped several times which caused the body of the truck to separate from the chassis. Once the cab and chassis separated the truck came to rest on its top.
Emergency crews responded to the accident scene just north of Wartburg and extricated Thornton from the wreckage. He was transported to an area hospital where he died Monday.
Morgan and a passenger in her car, Donald Seiber, II, 21, of Wartburg were also injured in the accident.
Thornton’s family will receive friends at Schubert Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13. The body will be cremated after the viewing and no service is planned.
