Two nights of family mathematical fun were to focus in Harriman as 143 families put their skills to the test for Bowers Elementary School’s second annual Family Math and Reading Nights.
Family math activities and games, bingo for books and dinner were among the attractions.
Each math teacher created one math activity or game for the families to play.
Games involved dice, cards and dominoes with homemade, store-bought and electronic games.
Children and parents competed using their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, measuring objects, problem solving, estimating, creating patterns, iPad games, and Active Expression games.
Teachers report that parents and grandparents were challenged as much as the children were — and the most excitement came when a child was able to beat their parent in a game.
Bowers Family Math and Reading Nights are devoted to showing children and their families that learning is fun and can be done with everyday items that they have at home.
The children are rewarded for attending with a homework pass that they can use when they want, free books, and coupons from area restaurants such as Wendy’s, Cracker Barrel, McDonald’s, Sonic, Subway, Krystal and KFC.
Bowers teachers said they are grateful to area businesses for caring about the children of Roane County.
