Roane Countians who donate blood with Medic Regional Blood Center will not only help their community but protect themselves and their families at the same time.

“Donors of Medic receive what is called Medic’s Blood Coverage,” said Christi Fightmaster of Medic public relations.

“This program exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood collection and processing fees if a transfusion is needed.”

Fightmaster said this benefit can save a family hundreds of dollars, and it only takes one donation per year to become a Medic member.

“Each additional donation adds another year’s credit towards a donor’s coverage,” she added. “For example, if someone gives two donations this year, he or she and IRS dependents would be covered until 2013.”

Fightmaster concluded, “Medic is known for their t-shirts; however, this benefit has real savings for individuals and families.”

Two upcoming blood drives are planned in Roane County. Donors can give on Aug. 24 in Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center and on Aug. 25 at a Medic mobile unit at Kingston Dollar General Store.

Both blood drives will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Medic also has donor centers at 1601 Ailor Ave., Knoxville; and and 11000 Kingston Pike, Farragut.

Donors must be 17 years of age or older and weigh 110 pounds or more. Sixteen-year-olds weighing 120 pounds or more can donate with parental consent.

All donors will be required to show identification.

Medic, a not-for-profit organization, is the sole provider of blood for 21 counties and 27 area hospitals, including Roane Medical Center in Harriman.
