Midway downs Greenback in opener

Thanks, in part, to Matt Jarvis' six three-pointers, the Midway Green Wave have punched their ticket to the Region 2-A Tournament with a 55-50 win over the Greenback Cherokees in the opening round of the District 3-A Tournament.

Both teams had a cold first period with Midway having a 5-4 edge at the end of the first period. 

In period number two, the Green Wave had runs of 12-5 and 8-2 to take a 25-11 halftime lead.

The second period proved huge as Midway was able to hold off every Cherokee rally in the second half.

Greenback whittled down the lead to 32-23 at the end of the third. 

Both teams combined for 50 points in the final period, but it was Midway holding on for the 55-50 win. 

Greenback had a 24-23 edge on the boards, but lost in team steals, 11-8 and in three-point shooting by a 7-3 tilt. 

Midway was led by Matt Jarvis (23 points, 6 three-pointers) and Thomas Viar (10 points, 10 boards) with a double-double.

Jake Parkison (8 points, 5 boards) and Caleb Ruffner (7 points, 5 assists) each played well in the win.

Greenback was led in defeat by Tyler Bryant (25 points, 12 boards) and Nick Sabo (17 points). 

Jered Collis (6 points, 6 boards) also played well in the loss.

With the victory, Midway advanced to Monday’s semifinals against No. 1 seed Harriman. Midway will also play Wednesday on the final day of the district tournament then the Green Waves will play Saturday night in the opening round of the Region 2-A Tournament.
