The Midway Green Wave stepped out of district Tuesday evening and traveled to Sweetwater, but the trip was not a good one as the Wildcats defended their baseball diamond with a 5-4 victory.
It was obvious on Tuesday that Green Wave skipper Isaiah Ruffner was using the game as a way to keep his pitching fresh as five different pitchers took the mound and none of that group threw more than two innings. Only one of the five had a bad inning as the Wildcats scored three of their five runs in the fifth inning.
Midway scored first Tuesday with a run in the top of the first inning. Logan Davidson singled, stole second and scored on a single from Hayden Hester.
Sweetwater tied the game in the bottom of the first, but Midway used a two-out rally, aided by some Wildcat miscues to take a 3-1 lead. Davidson singled and eventually scored on a passed ball for the first run of the inning. Christian Moore walked, stole second and third before advancing home on an error for the second run of the frame.
The Green Wave held the 3-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning and that’s when Sweetwater put three runs on the board to take a 4-3 lead.
Midway tied the game at 4-4 with another run in the top of the sixth inning. Hester walked, moved to second on a bunt, stole third and scored on an error to tie the score.
The seventh inning was full of drama as both teams loaded the bases, but only Sweetwater would score.
Midway got a single from Brady Burnum along with walks to Moore and Zach Edwards to fill the bases, but a fly ball to left ended the threat.
Sweetwater also loaded the bases with two outs and scored the winning run on a walk on a 3-2 pitch.
Midway played in a tournament in Harriman over the weekend and will finish the District 3-A portion of their schedule on Monday and Tuesday against Rockwood. The Green Wave will host the Tigers Monday before travelling to Rockwood on Tuesday.
