The first game of the new year saw Midway hosting Grace Christian Friday night.
The recent trends for both Midway teams continued into the 2013. The Lady Waves turned in another solid performance and used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Grace Christian for a 62-44 win.
But the trend was headed the other way for the Green Wave. They fell behind early and never caught the Rams, eventually falling 74-60 to drop their fifth game out of the last six.
One good bit of news for Midway was that senior Caleb Ruffner scored his 1000th career point at Midway. Ruffner finished with 14 against Grace Christian that would leave him with 1007 and with more than half the season left to play.
The Lady Waves moved to within a game of the .500 mark after the win against Grace. They are now 7-8 overall and 2-2 in District 3-A.
The Green Wave fell to 9-7 overall with the loss and are 3-2 in the district. Both teams return home Friday when they host Harriman.
The Lady Waves moved out to a slight lead after the first quarter and it would hold up until the fourth period when they outscored Grace 22-12 to get the 18-point win.
Midway led 17-11 at the end of one.
Abby Bertram fired in three hoops to lead Midway in the quarter. Taylor Whitehead added two hoops while Alisa Barger hit the first of four three pointers on the evening. Alexis Taylor and Jessie Lewis scored a basket each as all five starters tallied in the score book.
Caylene Pridemore scored three baskets to keep the Lady Rams close.
The second quarter was a defensive one. The two teams managed just four points each to leave Midway up 21-15 at halftime.
Both teams came out a bit looser in the third, but Midway still couldn't pull away, winning the quarter 19-17.
Barger led the Lady Waves in the third with two three-point bombs while Taylor and Bertram scored five each.
Lauren Hensley helped keep Grace close with seven points.
Barger gunned in her fourth trey and scored a two pointer early in the fourth then Rachael Tuttle came through in the clutch, hitting seven of eight free throws in the last minutes. Whitehead also knocked down three of four free tosses as the Lady Waves pulled away for the 18-point win.
Hensley hit three more baskets for Grace, but it wouldn't be enough to catch Midway.
Bertram (16), Barger (14) and Taylor (11) all scored in double figures for Midway on the evening.

The Green Wave fell behind early 20-5 at the end of one and were down 43-22 by halftime. It was just too deep of a hole to dig out of although they did cut the lead to 10 twice in the fourth quarter.
Jacob Cawood and Ruffner combined for Midway’s points in the opening period.
Grace's Tanner Hill bombed in three treys to lead the Rams in the opening period.
Midway picked up the scoring pace in the second, but still lost the quarter 23-17.
Ruffner led Midway with six points in the frame while Clay Clower and Adam Houser added four each.
Midway won the third quarter 22-14, but still couldn't get the lead to single digits.
Ruffner, Cawood and Houser scored six points each for Midway in the frame.
Clower and Cawood scored four points each in the fourth quarter, but could not get the Grace lead under 10.
Ruffner led Midway in defeat with 14 points while Cawood (13) and Houser (10 points) also scored in double figures.
