Midway takes two from Berean Christian

With an ice storm looming on Friday, the Midway Green Wave and Lady Waves traveled to Knoxville 24 hours early and swept the Berean Christian Eagles.

Midway’s girls dominated play on their way to a 63-26 victory. The boys game was a lot closer, but the Green Wave came out on top, 51-41.

Midway hosts Rockwood Friday night.

Girls Game

The Lady Waves dominated from start to finish in cruising to the 37-point victory.

Midway more than doubled Berean Christian in the first period, leading 15-7 after eight minutes of play.

The second period, however, would see the Lady Waves deliver the knockout. Midway outscored the Lady Eagles 22-3 in the frame to take a 37-10 at halftime.

Abby Bertram led Midway in the first half with 10 points while Taylor Whitehead added eight. 

Bertram scored seven more points while Kayla West added six in the third period as Midway’s lead ballooned to 53-21 with eight minutes to play.

The benches emptied in the final period with Midway winning the frame, 10-5, to put the finishing touches on their 63-26 victory.

Bertram led 11 Midway players in scoring with a game-high 17 points.

Anna Mershon paced the Lady Eagles with 10.

Boys Game

While Thursday’s first game was a blowout, the second game was closer with Midway picking up a 10-point victory.

Midway won all four periods of play Thursday, but three of the four periods were decided by two points or less.

Midway’s biggest advantage came in the opening period as they outscored the Eagles 10-4.

The second period would see Midway using a pair of Adam Houser three-pointers to outscore Berean Christian 11-10 in the frame and take a 21-14 lead at halftime.

Fifteen of Midway’s 21 first half points came from beyond the three-point arch.

Midway hit three more triples in the third period, but they only outscored the Eagles 16-15 in the frame to take a 37-29 lead into the final period of play.

Jacob Cawood stepped outside the arc and scored six points to lead the Green Wave in the third period.

Midway didn’t hit a three-pointer in the final period, but they did hold off the Eagles from the charity stripe. The Green Wave hit eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to hold on for the 51-41 victory.

Cawood paced Midway on the night with 13 points. Houser was next in line with nine points while Caleb Ruffner and Clay Clower scored eight each.

Jacob Rechenbach led the way for Berean Christian with 15 points.
