After taking a couple of weeks off for Christmas break, the Midway Middle School Green Waves and Lady Waves returned to action Monday evening.
The first game of the evening was a nail-biter as the Lady Waves rallied in the fourth quarter for a 36-35 victory.
The second game of the evening would be nowhere as dramatic as Midway rolled to a 56-22 victory.
It was better late than never for Midway’s offense as the Lady Waves struggled to find the basket for three quarters. The fourth quarter was a different story, however, as Shannon Cawood’s squad scored 19 of its 36 points on the night, and that was enough to pick up a one point victory.
Neither team did much in the first quarter as the game was tied at 4-4 after six minutes of play.
The second quarter would see both teams pick up the pace a little as Wartburg took a 15-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Abby Bertram scored five of Midway’s 11 points in the first half while Wartburg’s Victoria Hamby led all scorers with eight points.
The third quarter was also close, but the Lady Bulldogs would win the period 8-6 to take a 23-17 lead into the final period of play.
The final period, however, would be dominated by Midway’s Bertram and Jessie Lewis. Bertram scored nine points in the frame and Lewis added seven as the Lady Waves rallied for the 36-35 victory.
Bertram (14 points), Lewis (9 points) and Raygn Hall (9 points) did most of the damage for Midway on the evening.
Wartburg’s Hamby led all scorers with 19 points.
Midway (36) Bertram 14, Leffew 2, Hall 9, Lewis 9, Tuttle 2.
In a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated, Justin O’Toole’s Midway Green Waves crushed Wartburg by a final score of 56-22 Monday night.
The score could have been a lot worse if Midway hadn’t called off the dogs in the second half.
Midway put the game away early as they jumped out to a 24-0 lead after six minutes of play and that lead ballooned to 47-0 at halftime.
Two Midway players, Jacob Cawood and Griff Dishner, scored 10 points each to lead the Green Wave charge in the first half of play.
Mason Woody came close to giving the Green Waves a third player in double figures as he scored eight points in the first half.
Midway’s reserves played the second half and that allowed Wartburg to put up some respectable numbers in the final 12 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs won the third period, 12-3, and the final period, 10-6, to make the final score 56-22.
The Green Waves and Lady Waves will be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Lenoir City to take on the Panthers and Lady Panthers.
Midway (56) Woody 8, Hashmi 2, Edwards 4, Cawood 10, Gaus 6, Thompson 2, Klinker 1, Dishner 10, Schommer 3, Colyer 2, Hester 4, Hughes 2, Cowell 2.
