The 2010-11 basketball season got off to a great start for the Midway Middle School Green Waves and Lady Waves Monday night as both teams rolled to big wins over visiting Greenback.
The Lady Waves trailed at halftime, but rallied in the second half for a 34-24 victory, while the Midway boys were never threatened in a 53-23 triumph.
Midway returns to action Monday when they travel to Harriman.
Trailing 18-15 at halftime, it appeared that the Lady Waves were in danger of dropping their home opener, but the girls in green turned up the intensity on defense in the second half and the result was a 34-24 victory.
Midway trailed 12-10 after one period of play as the Lady Waves had trouble stopping Greenback’s Meghan Russell. Russell scored eight points in the frame while Abby Bertram scored six to lead Midway.
The scoring pace slowed in the second period as Greenback won the frame 6-5 to take an 18-15 lead at halftime.
Midway started to take control in the third period as the Lady Waves won the frame 9-1 to take a 24-19 lead with six minutes left to play. Jessie Lewis led Midway’s charge in the third period with six points.
Lewis kept it up in the final period as she scored seven more points in leading the Lady Waves to a 10-point victory.
Lewis led the Lady Waves on the night with 16 points while Bertram added eight.
Russell led Greenback with 11.

There wasn’t much drama in the nightcap game as Midway scored early and often in cruising to the 53-23 victory.
Midway almost scored enough points in the first period to win the game as the Green Waves led 22-7 after six minutes of play. Jacob Cawood did most of the damage in the first period, scoring 12 points.
The second quarter would be a little closer, but Midway still won the period by two points to take a 35-18 lead at halftime.
Midway had another big quarter in the third as they won the period 14-2 to take a commanding 49-20 lead.
The reserves played most of the final period as Midway went on to the 30-point victory.
Cawood led Midway with 21 points on the night while Jason Gaus added 10.
