Roane County Trustee Wilma Eblen said her office has received $1,300 for the “In God We Trust” resolution the County Commission approved on July 14 — significantly less than what officials said was needed.

The resolution calls for the phrase to be posted over the north and south entrances of the courthouse and in the commission meeting room.

Commissioner Randy Ellis, the sponsor of the resolution, said the cost to post the phrase at those locations will be about $4,200.

The effort is supposed to be funded entirely through private donations.

Eblen agreed to accept the donations for the county.

“They come in, and we give them a receipt,” she said about the process.

Eblen said the money is being kept in a line item in the trustee’s bank account.

The “In God We Trust” resolution passed the commission by a 13-1 vote.

Eblen said there appeared to be considerable interest in donating to the cause in the days that followed the July 14 vote.

Lately, however, it’s been sporadic, she said.
