Midway senior Christian Moore tossed a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts Monday evening in leading the Green Wave to a 7-0 victory over Tellico Plains.
The victory was a big one for the Green Wave as they improved to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in District 3-A.
Moore allowed only four base runners on the day. Besides the two hits, two other Bears reached safely on the evening thanks to a walk and hit batter. Tellico Plains, however, only got one of those runners past first base as Moore and the Green Wave defense were solid throughout.
Offensively, Midway took advantage of 11 hits and six Tellico Plains errors on the way to seven runs.
Midway took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Zach Edwards got the inning started with a single and he scored when Moore reached on an error. Hayden Hester followed with a double then Shandon Lyle drove in the second run of the inning with a single.
Midway took advantage of a pair of Bears errors in the second inning to make the score 4-0.
Justin Dutton singled and scored the first run on an error. Garrett Weingarten reached on an error and scored the second run on an RBI double from Edwards.
The Green Waves used a little two-out magic to add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning.
A pitch hit Alex Thomason with two outs. He advanced on a single from Dutton and scored when Zack Qualls reached on an error.
Midway manufactured another run in the fourth inning.
Weingarten walked and worked his way around the bases to make the score 6-0.
Midway’s final run came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Lyle singled then stole second and third before crossing home on a ground ball from Thomason.
Dutton (3-3, 1 run), Lyle (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run, 3 SBs), Hester (2-2, 2B) and Edwards (2-4, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 run) all had multiple hits on the day for the Green Wave.
Midway played at Tellico Plains on Tuesday.
The Green Wave return home Thursday evening when they host Sweetwater. Midway also plays at home Saturday against Mount Pisgah.
