For the third consecutive day, Roane County Schools are closed Wednesday due to extreme cold weather.
"We just called it," Roane County Director of Schools Gary Aytes said at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. “We still had three or four roads with icy conditions. There was also a real concern about the wind chill in the morning and students waiting out at the bus stop.”
Most students are picked up in front of their homes, Aytes said, "but we have some areas where there are bus stops."
The school system was supposed to reopen on Monday after the two-week holiday break, but school officials opted against it for the protection of students and staff. School was called off fairly quickly for Monday and Tuesday, but Aytes said he took a wait-and-see approach to Wednesday's closing.
“It was a tough one today because it's going to warm up tomorrow, but we didn't want to take a chance," he said. "The safety of the children is important to us.”
“Hopefully we won't see this frigid weather again for a while.”
