The Oliver Springs Bobcats used a strong showing from Caleb Armetta on the mound and a pair of big innings at the plate Monday to knock off Oakdale, 12-2, in a District 4-A game at Arrowhead Park.
Armetta went the distance Monday, allowing only five hits and one walk while recording seven strikeouts. Both Oakdale runs were unearned.
Oliver Springs scored first Monday with a run in the bottom of the first inning. A pitch hit Keith Roberts to open the inning and he eventually worked his way around the bases to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Taylor Coleman also had a hit for Oliver Springs in the opening inning.
Oakdale’s Justin Moore reached on an error and scored for the Eagles in the top of the second inning, but the Bobcats got that run back in the bottom of the frame.
Tyler Stombaugh opened the inning with a single and scored Oliver Springs’ run in the frame.
Elijah White, Roberts and Dakota Thompson also reached in the frame, but the Bobcats were unable to come up with a big two-out hit to open up the score.
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bobcats used a three-run frame to make the score 5-1.
Roberts again got the inning started when he reached on an error. After an out, Coleman doubled then Tanner Turpin reached on an error. All three would come around to score to give the Bobcats the four-run lead.
Oakdale got one of those runs back when Jonah DeVaney singled and scored, but the Eagles would not get a chance to bat again as Oliver Springs exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
Armetta, Stombaugh, White, Roberts, Thompson, Coleman and Turpin all scored in the inning as Oliver Springs picked up their second district win of the year. Armetta and White had the big hits of the inning as both had two-run singles.
Coleman (2-3, 1 2B, 2 runs) and White (2-2, 1 run) had multiple hits for Oliver Springs in the win.
