Oliver Springs takes on bigger schools in weekend tourney

The Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats played four games in two days over the weekend at the 2011 Suzie Wilkie Invitational and things didn’t go as well as the Lady ‘Cats wanted as Matt Headden’s squad went 1-3 against mostly bigger schools.

Oliver Springs’ victory came against county rival Harriman as the Lady ‘Cats downed the Lady Devils, 8-2.

Oliver Springs’ remaining games were against Class AAA competition. Oliver Springs lost to Lenoir City, 4-3, Clinton downed the Lady ‘Cats, 5-0, and Oliver Springs’ final game on Saturday was a 6-3 setback against Oak Ridge.

The Lady Bobcats used three big innings to pick up an 8-2 victory over the Lady Devils.

After a scoreless first inning, Oliver Springs took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady ‘Cats made it 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the Lady Devils made things interesting with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Oliver Springs, however, put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kayla Crisp (2-3, 2 runs) and Shelby Miller (2-3, 1 3B, 2 runs) had multiple hits on the day for the Lady ‘Cats. Cheltzie Sheldon, Lauren Johnson and Macy Martin also had hits for Oliver Springs.

Kaylee Morgan picked up the victory on the mound for Oliver Springs after allowing only one hit and striking out six in four innings of work.

Lindsey Higgins (1-2, 1 2B, 1 run) picked up Harriman’s only hit while Jordan Steelman scored Harriman’s second run.

Lenoir City

The Lady Bobcats battled the Lady Panthers to a 3-3 tie after five innings of play, but with time running low, the international tiebreaker was put into effect in the sixth inning and the Lady Panthers took advantage by scoring the winning run.

Oliver Springs scored first and held a 1-0 lead after two innings of play, but the Lady Panthers scored two runs in the third inning and would take a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning. The Lady ‘Cats made up that run in the fifth inning, but the Lady Panthers would pull out the 4-3 victory with a run in the sixth inning.

Morgan (2-3) was the only Lady ‘Cat player to have multiple hits on the day for Oliver Springs. Miller (1-3, 1 RBI) and Martin (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) also had hits while Crisp and Sheldon scored runs.

Oliver Springs struggled hitting the ball against the Lady Dragons and the result was a 5-0 loss.

Clinton scored one run in each of the first three innings then the Lady Dragons put the game away with two runs in the fourth inning.

Oliver Springs had just two hits in the loss as Kayla Aloisi and Sheldon reached safely.

Oak Ridge

The Lady Bobcats hit the ball well against the Lady Wildcats, but Oliver Springs couldn’t come up with enough clutch hits as Oak Ridge won the four-inning game, 6-3.

Miller and Martin both had hits in the first inning then Brittany Armstrong singled in the second inning for Oliver Springs, but all three runners would be left stranded as Oak Ridge jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Oliver Springs finally broke through with three runs in the third inning. Crisp, Morgan and Martin had singles in the frame while Aloisi came up with a big double.

Oliver Springs, however, couldn’t come up with another big inning as Oak Ridge used a run in the third and another in the fourth to pick up the 6-3 victory.

 Morgan (2-3, 1 run) and Martin (2-2, 1 RBI) had multiple hits for the Lady ‘Cats in the loss.
