In what can be best described as total domination, the Oliver Springs Middle School Bobcats rolled to a 26-6 win over Norwood Thursday night.
"Coach Tony Dutton had a great defensive plan and we managed to hold Norwood to just two first downs the whole game." Bobcat head coach Larry Green said. "Our offensive line, Dylan Todd, Bobby Crass, Taylor Murray, Blake Taylor and Casey Wilson, all played well and our backs ran hard tonight."
The Bobcats started off their game stripping Norwood of the ball to start at the Jaguar 19-yard line. Two plays later, Dakota Thompson sprinted in from 13 yards out for the score.
The two-point try fell short, leaving the score 6-0 with 5:58 to go in the first quarter.
Norwood responded right back with a 75-yard touchdown kickoff return by Blake Danner to tie the game up at 6-6 after the failed two-point conversion with 5:31 to go in the first quarter.
The Bobcats got the ball back and took just three plays to cover 66 yards when Thompson scored on a 44-yard run.
The two-point play fell short making the score 12-6 with 3:34 to go in the first quarter.
Norwood would get the ball back, but went three-and-out, punting the ball back to Oliver Springs, who got to the Norwood 8-yard line at the end of the first quarter with the score at 12-6.
The Bobcats wrapped up the five-play, 51-yard drive with an eight-yard Thompson touchdown.
The two-point try again fell short, making the score 18-6 with 7:50 to go in the first half.
Norwood managed to move the chains once before getting intercepted in the end zone.
Oliver Springs got deep in Norwood territory late in the half, but got picked off to end the half up 18-6.
The Bobcats started off the second half with a seven-play, 42-yard drive with the score coming on a seven-yard run from Markus Miller.
The two-point try again fell short, making the score 24-6 with 3:35 to go in the third quarter.
Norwood managed to move the chains once before the end of the third quarter, trailing 24-6.
The Jaguars would be stopped on fourth down to start the final quarter and Oliver Springs got inside the 5-yard line of Norwood, but was unable to punch it in.
The Bobcats, however, racked up a safety to score their final points of the game with the score being 26-6.
Norwood beat the Bobcats in passing 34-0, but lost on the ground to the Bobcats 259-11 to give Oliver Springs the 259-45 edge in total yardage.
The Bobcats were led on the ground by Thompson (15-148-3 TDs) and Miller (14-111- 1 TD).
Norwood was led on offense by QB Keith Roberts (3-8, 34 yards) and Jonathan Bean was the leading receiver (1- 35).
"I wish we could have completed a pass or two tonight,” Green said. "I also wish we could have punched it in on that last drive and we need to get better on our two-point conversion plays."
Next up for the Bobcats is a showdown with Cherokee Middle School.
"They're big, strong, and very physical like they are every year and we're going need a great week of practice to be ready for them," Green said.
