P-J captures small division championship

The Petros-Joyner Patriots captured the 2008 Area 2 Small Division Championship with an exciting 50-49 overtime win over Fairview Saturday night at Sunbright.

Cody Hill sent the game into overtime with two free throws with 1.9 seconds left to tie the count at 39.

In the extra period, the Patriots used an 11-10 edge to pull out the 1-point win over the Rebels.

Hill (23 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals) and Alex Fountain (12 points, 17 rebounds, 8 blocks) did the damage for P.J. (19-4).ee

The Patriots earned an automatic bid to the TMSAA East Sectional Small School Tournament at Pigeon Forge. P.J. is set to play a quarterfinal game next Monday, February 11th at 6:15 p.m.

Sunbright’s Lady Tigers weren’t so fortunate in the girls championship game as they dropped a 40-36 overtime thriller to #1 Fairview.

The Lady Tigers overcame a 10-1 deficit early on to rally and force an overtime before they were outscored 7-3 to drop a four-point game.

Sarah Sexton (10 points, 7 rebounds), Angeliccaa Williams (8 points, 8 steals, 5 boards, 4 assists) and Hannah McWhorter (8 points, 5 steals, 3 assists) led Sunbright.ee

Sunbright lost their sub-state game to Lenoir City by a 35-25 count Monday night.

The #8 Wartburg Lady Bulldogs had the tough task of facing #1Jacksboro in the title game at Anderson County Saturday afternoon as the Morgan County team was playing it’s fourth game in five days. The Cinderella team ran out of gas in the second half and dropped a 3929 loss after leading 166 in the second quarter.

Amber Justes (12 points), who hit 4 treys, Kellie Kidd (9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) led the way, while Sarah Davidson (12 rebounds, 3 steals) and Madison Laughter each added 4 points.

Wartburg will host Sweetwater this Thursday at 7 p.m. for a chance to go to the East Tennessee Sectional Tournament in Seveirville.
