A resolution that called for Roane County to “appropriate money to pay for pauper burials/cremations” was deferred to County Attorney Tom McFarland.

Commissioners made the move at Monday night’s regular meeting.

“We feel as though this could potentially put the county on the hook for a substantial amount of money,” Commissioner Steve Kelley said. “We have asked the county attorney to provide us with any statutory information to find out what our obligations are, if we have any obligations before we make a final decision.”

Commissioner Bobby Collier, who also serves on the budget committee, said he wasn’t opposed to the resolution but wanted more information.

“Is it deferred for a period of time?” Commissioner Ray Cantrell asked.

“It’s deferred until we have a county attorney report,” Kelley responded.
