Poor quarter dooms Kingston

-A A +A
By Brody Jones

The Kingston Lady Jackets were looking for their second win over the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers in the span of three days Thursday night in the opening round of the District 4-AA Tournament at Roane County High School.

Unfortunately for the Kingston faithful, a scoreless second period for the home team ultimately spelled "d-o-o-m" for victory aspirations as the Lady Panthers ended Kingston's season with a 52-45 victory.

Kingston scored first in the game, but the Lady Panthers embarked on a 10-4 tilt after that to help guide them to a 13-10 lead at the end of the opening period.

Haley Cornellison and Harli-Blaine Oran (4 points each) led the Lady Jackets in scoring in the opening period.

Murphy's Law was in effect for Kingston in the second period as anything that could go wrong, did go wrong, and the Lady Jackets fell prey to a 12-0 swing through the second period to trail 25-10 at the half.

In the third period, the Lady Jackets went on a 13-5 run at one point to get within 30-25. However, at the end of the third period, the Lady Panthers closed out on a 7-2 tilt to take a 37-27 lead to the final stanza.

Cornellison led the Lady Jackets in the third period with seven points.

The Lady Jackets pulled to within three points with key free throws by Sydney Nunley and Kalli Sampson in the midst of a 10-3 swing. However, the Lady Panthers closed the game out on a 12-5 run to take the win.

Stone Memorial had a 48-38 tilt on the boards, and forced 23 turnovers compared to 16 for Kingston.

Kingston was led by Cornellison (13 points), Sydney Nunley (11 points, 10 boards), Kalli Sampson (10 points), and Harli-Blaine Oran (7 points).

 Kingston (45) Cornellison 13, Nunley 11, Sampson 10, Oran 7, Mossing 2, Layne 2.
