Prayer service, balloon release for drug abuse

-A A +A

Those who have suffered from drug abuse, as well as those who give thanks that the negative effects of drug abuse haven’t entered into their lives are encouraged to join family and friends of Clayton Smith and the Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition for a special prayer and “Say No to Drugs” balloon release.

The ninth annual event starts at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Smith’s gravesite at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

It honors recovery efforts of anyone who has suffered from drug addiction and remembers the lives of loved ones lost due to drug abuse.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a picture of their loved ones to place on the Memorial Wall during the event.

Each balloon released at the end of the event will have a special “Say No To Drugs” ribbon attached.

The balloon release is organized by Donna Forstrom, founder and president of Clayton’s Lesson. The organization was founded in November 2003 after the untimely death of Smith, Forstrom’s 17-year-old son, due to an accidental drug overdose.

It is co-sponsored by the Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition.

Kevin Rhea of Knoxville will lead the group in prayer before the balloons are released.
