Raiders battle to split

It was a good news, bad news type of weekend for Randy Nesbit’s Roane State Raiders.

The good news came Friday night as Roane State knocked off visiting Motlow State, 68-66.

The bad news came on Saturday, however, as the Raiders dropped their first home game of the season, falling to Volunteer State, 83-67.

With the split, Roane State falls to 14-7 overall and 8-6 in TJCCAA play.

The Raiders have two more conference games on tap this week. The Raiders travel to Chattanooga State Wednesday and they will host Cleveland State on Saturday.

The Raiders close the regular season next Saturday with a home game against Walters State. Roane State also has a makeup game at home against Chattanooga State.

Friday’s Game

Friday’s game was close throughout, but in the end the Raiders were able to hold off the Bucks, 68-66.

The duo of Yavario Smith (11 points) and Kinard Gadsen-Gilliard (9 points) led the Raiders in the first half with a combined 20 points. Smith and Gadsen-Gilliard’s play allowed the Raiders to take a 35-33 lead at halftime.

Things remained tight in the second half, but Roane State would not be denied as the Raiders held on for the 68-66 victory.

Gadsen-Gilliard led Roane State with 18 points and eight rebounds. Smith was next in line with 13 points.

Quint Clinkscales (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Jerrod Allen (9 points) came close to giving Roane State four players in double figures.

Darryn Frazier led a balanced Motlow State attack with 11 points.

Saturday’s Game

It was a tale of two halves Saturday afternoon as the Raiders came up on the short end of an 83-67 decision against the Pioneers.

The first half was a shootout as both teams found a lot of success finding the bottom of the basket.

Seven different players scored for Roane State in the first half. Jacob Pettway scored 13 points to lead the charge while Jonathan Maybank (9 points) and Yavario Smith (8 points) also put up big numbers.

Volunteer State, however, also had a lot of success in the first half as the Pioneers led 45-44 at intermission.

The one-two punch of Lashane Purdy (12 points) and Tim Eriste (11 points) combined for 23 points in the first half for Volunteer State.

Hunter Harris added eight points in the first half for the Pioneers and he would knock down 13 more points in the second half as Volunteer State pulled away for the 16-point victory.

Harris led Volunteer State on the night with 21 points while Purdy (19 points) and Eriste (15 points) also scored in double figures.

Pettway led the way for the Raiders with 19 points and seven rebounds. Clinkscales (11 points, 5 rebounds) and Smith (10 points) also scored in double figures for Roane State.

Antonio Kalpic led the Raiders with eight rebounds while Gadsen-Gilliard dished out four assists.
