The weather produced a cold start to the 2011 baseball season on Saturday for David Lane’s Roane State Raiders, but that was about all that went wrong as Roane State travelled to Cleveland State and swept the Cougars in a double header.

Roane State took game one of the twin bill, 5-2, and they followed that up with a 7-6 victory in game two.

The Raiders take to the diamond again next Friday when they host Olney Central in the first of three games at home.

Game One

One big inning proved to be the difference in game one as Roane State blew open a 1-1 tie after four innings by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Roane State trailed 1-0 after three innings, but pulled even with a run in the top of the fourth. The Raiders made it 4-1 after the big fifth inning.

Cleveland State closed the gap to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Raiders got that run back in the top of the sixth.

Neither team had a lot of hits on the day as Roane State scored five runs on six hits while the Cougars scored their runs on five hits.

1B Sean Greenway was the only Raider with multiple hits on the day as he went 2-3 with two runs scored.

SS Justin Trent and 3B Wade Collins drove in two runs each while C Brandon Wilson smacked a solo homer.

Tyler Arnett picked up the victory on the mound for the Raiders as he tossed four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one.

Kacy Kemmer picked up the save after allowing one hit in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Kemmer had four strikeouts.

Game Two

Both teams came out smoking in game two, but luckily for Roane State fans, the Raiders had a little more umph in their bats as the completed the sweep with a 7-6 victory.

Roane State trailed 3-2 after one inning of play, but the roles were reversed in the second inning as the Raiders pulled even at 5-5.

The game would be decided in the fourth and fifth innings. Roane State scored single runs in those frames while Cleveland State only scored in the fifth to leave the Raiders on top, 7-6.

Roane State was out hit in game two, 9-5, but the Raiders did take advantage of five walks and three Cougar errors in picking up the win.

Trent was the big gun for the Raiders as he went 3-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. CF Jonathan Elmore added two RBIs for the Raiders.
