The Roane State men’s basketball team earned a convincing 76-60 win in Morristown Saturday night from Walters State.
The conference opener gives the Raiders a 1-0 league start and a 3-1 mark overall.
The host team, coming into a new season off of their March ’10 national tournament appearance, had a difficult time generating any consistent offense against the RSCC man-to-man defense.
After a tight opening 10 minutes, the visiting Raiders gained some momentum and held leads from seven to nine points before settling for a 38-32 advantage at the half.
RSCC came out strong to start the second half, pulling out to a nine-point lead.
The Senators then switched to a 2-3 zone, which disrupted the Raiders’ offensive timing and gave Walters State a temporary boost to take a one-point lead.
The Raiders, however, settled into a flow against the zone and scored inside and outside, including three 3-point bombs by sophomore Yavario Smith, to knock the Senators out of their zone after building an 11-point advantage.
The Raiders coasted home as RSCC and 6’11” sophomore Brad Reid, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, took control of the backboards. Fellow sophomore Antonio Kalpic (6’9”) and 6’6” sophomore Quint Clinkscales added 11 and 13 points, respectively, to Smith’s outpouring of 24 points overall. 6’5” freshman Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard and 6’6” sophomore Jacob Pettway handed out five assists a piece while 6’2” freshman Jonathan Maybank contributed 11 points and three steals.
Next up for the Raiders is a road trip to Dyersburg State and Southwest (Memphis) in back-to-back Friday/Saturday games.
The Raiders return home next Monday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. against Lee University before idling over Thanksgiving.
