If the Harriman Blue Devils are going to make an appearance in next week’s TSSAA Class A State Tournament in Murfreesboro, they will have to do so by winning Friday’s sectional contest on the road.
The Devils lost a chance at hosting Friday’s contest after they were beaten by Grace Christian Academy in Wednesday’s Region 2-A championship game, 10-0.
“We’re going to have to make a trip,” Harriman head coach Andy Adcox said after the game. “It’s not something we wanted to do, but we didn’t get it done today. You have to give Grace a lot of credit, they’ve got a good team.”
Harriman opened Wednesday’s game with a single from Cody Barnard, but that was about all the good news for the Blue Devils as that would be the only hit they got off Grace Christian’s Xander Helton on the day.
Helton finished the day seven strikeouts and three walks.
Grace Christian got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning as they turned two hits, one walk, one wild pitch and one error into three runs.
The Rams put the game away with a five-run third inning and Grace Christian ended the game early with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Harriman started Barnard on the mound, but Barnard lasted only two innings as Coach Adcox was thinking about Friday’s sectional.
“We pulled Cody early today in case we need him on Friday,” Adcox said.
Harriman will play at North Greene or Unaka on Friday. The Rangers and Huskies played Thursday night in the Region 1-A championship game.
“I think this is the fifth time we’ve went on the road in the sectionals,” Adcox said. “We lost the first four and they’ve all been at Unaka so hopefully we’ll figure something out. It really doesn’t matter who we play because both teams are pretty good and we’ll have to play well if we want to win.”
Harriman defeated Unaka in last year’s sectional at home, 9-7.
