The public is encouraged to go to the 2013 Smoky Mountain FIRST Robotics Regional Competition this weekend in support of Full Metal Jackets, the Roane County High School robotics team.

The competition will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 29-30 in Knoxville Convention Center at 701 Henley St. Admission is free.

In the 2013 FIRST — or For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology — Robotics Competition, Full Metal Jackets will participate in Ultimate Ascent.

In that competition, robots designed and built by students compete to score as many discs into their goals as they can during a 2-minute, 15-second match.

The Full Metal Jackets of 43 students — 42 from Roane County High and one from nearby Midway High School — created Robo-Jacket, a robot that will climb a three-level pyramid at the end of the competition.

Adviser Cynthia Holmes is assisted by mentors Ken Tobin, Alley, Diane Bull and Tim Theiss from ORNL; Ed Michaud from South College; Ronnie McKamey of TVA; and Cecil Jenkins of Jenkins Fabrication.
