Midtown Elementary School’s spring concert in the Princess Theatre featured some brand-new instruments.
Thirty-seven students performed in various acts, including the choir and a talent show.
Forty-nine fifth-graders played newly puchased recorders supplied through donations from donorschoose.com.
The site allows teachers to post their projects, and donors can support the cause of their choosing.
“We had some wonderful local donors who donated more than once, along with a large corporate sponsor, who made it possible for each fifth-grader to pick the color of their choosing for their recorder,” said fifth-grader Beth Trescher. “The fifth-graders learned how to play the fingerings to play their recorders and how to read music in the treble clef over the last nine-week period of school.”
The recorder concert started with “Hot Cross Buns.” Class selections were Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” “Amazing Grace” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and an audience participation tune, “We Will Rock You.”
Trescher said she hopes the recorder gifts inspire the students to join middle school band.
