Roane County’s Relay for Life is still fighting the fight to end cancer.

This year’s theme is “Finish the Fight,” and the annual nightlong fundraising walking event for the American Cancer Society will begin at 6 p.m. April 25 at Roane State Community College.

“Our goal is to get more people involved, both people to have teams — like maybe if they have somebody in the family that passed who had cancer or somebody that is a survivor,” Co-Chairwoman Lori Wright said.

“We also want to recruit survivors to come to Relay for Life so we can honor them.”

This year’s fundraising goal is $70,000, down from 2013’s $75,000, which was inspired when the previous year’s fundraising efforts went far above expectations.

In addition, the Roane County Relay for Life is once again focusing on a special night for cancer survivors.

This year’s reception is April 12 at Roane State Community College.

The 5:30 p.m. reception with food and goody bags for the survivors will be followed by a Roane State Alumni Concert at 7.

Survivors and those who lost the fight against cancer will be honored during the Relay event.

Fundraisers this year included selling Yankee Candles.

A roadblock will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  March 22 at Roane Street and Hwy. 29A in Harriman.

U.S. Bank is also hosting a Power of Purple run  in which runners will be splattered with purple, or perhaps pink, paint as they run. That event will be March 29 at Roane County Park. More information will be available soon.

A pancake breakfast is 7 to 10 a.m. April 12 in Harriman Ruby Tuesday. It is a fundraising effort by the Kiwanis Club of Roane County.
Paint the Town Purple will also be an initiative to bring awareness to the issues on April 21-25.

“It is something of a competition between the towns, probably more like the downtown areas to decorate with purple ribbons on light poles, decorate the windows in purple,” Wright said.

“The businesses will have collection jars for donations and things like that.”

The next team captain meeting is at 5:30 p.m. March 18 in Roane State’s O’Brien Building room 201.
