Family, friends and Rockwood Middle School students helped keep the memory of Morgan Peters alive with a butterfly garden and bench dedication this month.
In 2012, Morgan was a sixth-grader at Rockwood Middle when she contracted meningitis and died last May 6.
“She was such a special young lady that we wanted to do something just as special,” said Maranda Summers, Rockwood Middle librarian.
Morgan’s family members said they are appreciative of the public support and caring.
“It’s unbelievable that she’s just loved still so much,” Joy Peters, Morgan’s grandmother, said.
The bench was handmade by Morgan’s stepfather, Jackie Peters.
“When her grandpa wanted to make the bench, everything just seemed to fall into place,” said Mandy Evans, Rockwood Middle principal.
“We just wanted a place for teachers and students to be able to get a break,” added Joy Peters.
Everything in the garden — from the bench, butterfly sculpture and plants — has been donated.
John Kennedy’s construction class at Rockwood High School helped with the building of the garden.
