The Rockwood Middle School Tigers are making it look easy as they have rolled to three easy wins to start the 2010 season.
The most recent victim of Scott Harvey's steamroller was Oliver Springs as the Tigers scored on all five first half possessions en route to a 36-0 victory.
"I thought our guys came out and played well," Coach Harvey said. "I didn't know how we'd respond after an emotional game against Jefferson, but I thought we came out and got after 'em. I am especially proud of Coach (Benny) Collins and the defense. He does a good job preparing our team each week.”
The Tigers opened the game on offense and put together a quick five-play, 61-yard scoring drive to take the lead for good.
The drive opened with three straight runs by FB Brant Mitchell covering 46 yards then RB Drake Long capped the drive with a five-yard run.
Logan Abbott added the two-point run to make the score 8-0 with 5:39 left in the first quarter.
“We wanted to come out and establish our fullback,” Harvey said. “I thought our offensive line did a good job of getting to their blocks.”
Rockwood's second scoring drive was quicker as Kyron Inman scored from 71 yards out on the third play of the Tigers second drive.
Mitchell added the two-point conversion to make the score 16-0 with 2:40 left in the opening period.
Rockwood's third scoring drive lasted three plays and covered 44 yards. The Tigers touchdown came on a 40-yard halfback pass from Long to R.J. Matyjasik to make the score 22-0 with 6:57 left in the second period.
Rockwood's defense scored the fourth touchdown as Inman picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards for the score. Mitchell added the conversion to make the score 30-0 with 5:46 left in the first half.
The Tigers scored one more touchdown in the first half as Abbott broke free from 76 yards out to make the score 36-0 with 2:48 left in the opening half.
The second half went by quickly as the clock ran continuously due to the TMSAA's mercy rule.
Rockwood ended the night with 247 yards of total offense. The Tigers ran the ball 22 times for 207 yards with Abbott (3-87-1 TD), Inman (3-83-1 TD) and Mitchell (3-46) leading the way.
Oliver Springs ended the evening with 53 total yards. Markus Miller (6 carries, 32 yards) and Derek Tinker (9 carries, 26 yards) led the way for the Bobcats.
Rockwood will look to improve to 4-0 Thursday night when they host Harriman.
“We’re going to enjoy labor day break then come back on Tuesday and start preparing for Harriman,” Harvey said.
Oliver Springs (2-1) will look to bounce back when they take on Norwood.
